Today, Google wants authors.

The tech company — let’s be honest, it’s no longer just a “search giant” — now supports authorship markup, a method to connect authors with their Internet content.

There’s something in it for Google: more user data.

I don’t like the fact that it was probably going to take Google signing off on this idea to make it realistic. But the idea seems to pass on first impressions.

Yes, that’s me putting my trust in the entity that I also called the Death Star.

I wrote about the potential for a type of online press badge in a class last fall. This initiative doesn’t move that far, but it is a measure that could shift discussions in that direction.

Caveat: try not to Google drunk.
