Breaking codes is an interesting challenge.

My roommate Ian came back with an assignment last year for his computer science class.  A page full of numbers broken into 5-digit blocks. I was eager to help.

We explored letter frequency and common letter pairs and triples.  We never did break the code (frustrating), but the memory reminded me of the letter “E.”

Yes, the letter “E,” the most commonly used letter in the English vocabulary. But it is disappearing!

Sites like Twitter and Google have been faithful, but with the dearth of domain names on the web now, misspellings are piling up faster than the snowflakes outside.

Flickr, Tumblr, Trendrr, and of course, iStalkr.

A case of the vanishing letter.  Egads.
